Install ENERGY STAR® Qualified Windows

Let the sun in, while you keep the cold out

The average window loses a considerable amount of heat, which means lost money and energy. When shopping for new windows, look for products with the ENERGY STAR®* symbol.

The ENERGY STAR® mark is administered and promoted by Natural Resources Canada. To qualify, windows are tested in four climate zones. The label indicates in what zones they are considered energy efficient.

ENERGY STAR® windows feature:

  • Double–or triple layers of low emissivity (low–e) glass
  • Sealed panes containing inert gas (argon or krypton)
  • Insulating frames and sashes with 'warm edge' spacer bars
  • Superior air tightness

Benefits of ENERGY STAR® windows

  • Save heating and cooling costs
  • Work equally well keeping heat in and cold out
  • Reduce drafts and minimize air leakage
  • Allow you to raise relative humidity, which results in less static electricity
  • Reduce the risk of condensation, which impairs visibility, deteriorates frame components and causes mould

Features of energy–efficient windows

Energy Rating (ER) measure a window's overall performance against the following three criteria:

  • Solar heat gains
  • Heat loss through frames, spacer & glass
  • Heat loss through air leakage

Low–Emissivity (Low–E) coating & Argon filled windows

  • Low–E is an invisible glass coating that has the ability to reflect heat back into your home in the winter and reflect the sun's heat out in the summer.
  • Argon is an inert gas that fills the cavity between panes of glass to slow down heat loss. When combined with Low–E coating, argon–filled windows withstand higher humidity levels and lower outdoor temperatures before condensation forms.

Warm edge spacers

New materials and technology are now being used to make "warm edge" spacers (strips of material separating two panes of glass) that reduce heat loss and condensation.

Weather–stripping

ENERGY STAR windows require weather–stripping that gives a tighter seal between the frame and sash.
